Washington, D.C. — With the presumptive Democratic Nominee for President Kamala Harris expected to select her running mate in the coming days, Fight Corporate Monopolies released a memo analyzing the leading state-based candidates records on antitrust, economic concentration, and corporate power policy issues, and rating their track record on a scale of one to five stars.
“The Biden-Harris administration has made significant progress in advancing a pro-worker, pro-small business agenda and a strong partner to VP Harris will help champion those wins on the campaign trail,” Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at Fight Corporate Monopolies. “We’re using our experience working in the states to provide a sober analysis of the field. The Harris campaign should consider a potential VP candidate’s record on challenging corporate interests as a determining factor. Standing up to corporate power is overwhelmingly popular and economically sound policy, which is why it must be at the forefront of Vice President Harris’ agenda and core to the Democrat ticket.”
Informed by Fight Corporate Monopolies’ work organizing advocates and advising state leaders on anti-monopoly policy, the memo examines the records of leading state-based VP candidates, including Tim Walz, Josh Shapiro, Gretchen Whitmer, JB Pritzker, Andy Beshear, and Mark Kelly. It analyzes how strongly each candidate has stood up to corporate power, whether by championing anti-monopoly related legislation, cracking down on corporate abuses, or promoting labor protections. While not an exhaustive list of their records, achievements, and errors, it provides important insights into how they might help a Harris administration govern. The memo tracks their records on a scale of one to five stars.
